TULSA - The 2008 road
to OKC got off to a rocky start for the Chouteau Wildcats and
Ladycats Friday night, as both were upended against Metro
Christian.
In the girls' game, the Ladycats got off to a great start, but
in the end, fell 49-46. The Ladycats started out on a 8-0
run, forcing Metro to take a timeout in the first minute of the
game. But the pesky Lady Patriots wouldn't back down.
After trailing 14-9 after the first quarter, Metro rode the back
of Katy Preaus. Preaus scored 7 of her 15 points in the
second quarter. She also gave Metro their first lead of
the game. With 5:38 remaining in the first half, Preaus
banked a trey that put them up 16-15. However, the lead
was short lived, as Chouteau's Lexie Searles banked a three on
the other end, putting Chouteau back on top, 19-17.
However, Metro was able to regain the lead going into the locker
room at the midway point, 24-23.
The third quarter belonged to Metro's Johanna Sheppard.
Sheppard was 6-of-6 from the charity stripe in the third quarter
alone, and finished the game 8-of-10 from the line.
The only thing that hindered the Ladycats was their lack of
offensive rebounding. Several trips down the floor
resulted in a one shot and out for Chouteau. Despite the
second chance shots, Chouteau was still in the ballgame until
the final buzzer, when junior Sarah Moore almost drained a three
that would have sent the game into overtime.
"There's nothing to be ashamed about in this loss," said head
coach Jeff Oliver. "We were this close from sending the
game into OT, and we got the shot off. That's what we
wanted."
Despite spotting the #6 Patriots a 12-0 lead in the first
quarter, the Chouteau Wildcats gave Metro everything they could
handle...and more. The resilient Cats simply wouldn't give
up, outscoring the Pats 20-18 in the second quarter.
Metro's Todd Canady was fouled while shooting a three in the
waning seconds of the half. Canady sunk all three,
giving them a 30-20 lead at the break.
The Cats hung in for as long as possible, but in the end, the
Pats were just too tough. The second half belong to Metro,
as they cruised to a 75-52 win.
Both Chouteau teams will now play the loser of the
Kansas-Chelsea game, which is slated for Saturday night.
The Ladycats will play in Kansas at 1:30 on Thursday, while the
Cats will follow with a 3pm tipoff.
